“I’m Not Scared” has been written and illustrated by me. It is set in a real Jacobean Manor house and estate in North London, the Forty Hall Estate. While the story is a fictional one, it is about a real dog called Rip, who was a pet of the last family that lived there. The story is set in real locations and features characters that can be found or documented in the house as well as amongst the surrounding woodlands and lakes of the estate.
The story is centred around Rip’s attempt to retrieve his bone from a band of naughty ladybirds. His journey takes him through the kitchen’s fireplace, down a dark tunnel then falling through a secret door. Here he meets Bee (and friends), but they can’t help, they point him in the direction the ladybirds went.
He continues to the panelled room that leads into the walled garden, here he meets Giddy the goat who warns him of the danger ahead.
He nervously ventures on and meets the terrible toad, who suggests they have dinner together. Rip is now faced with being eaten up or braving the fast-flowing stream, he can see in the distant the ladybirds on a raft fleeing with his bone. He takes a chance, jumps onto a log and is swept along. The story ends with a twist…..
A perfect book share (age 3) or an independent read for Key Stage 1 (ages 5 – 7).
