In the village of Amarpurkashi, in Uttar Pradesh, a paper factory has been illegally polluting the area at unimaginable levels. While the factory is a welcome source of employment, the impact of its illegal management of the pollution is causing untold harm to the community. Ash is dumped onto farmers’ land on a daily basis, affecting the crops, the income and the health of the community. The water tests from the river have revealed alarming results, and the quality of the air is also causing many health problems to the villagers and their livestock.

Our Path to Survival

This is a positive story of survival and self-empowerment. Four women from the Indian state of Gujarat tell us how they came out of extreme situations of mental and physical abuse from their husbands and families. These women’s path to survival has been nurtured by the organization AWAG, founded by Ilaben Pathak in Ahmedabad, which has been working tirelessly for the empowerment of women and for a change in the patriarchal policies and social norms of Gujarat.
This documentary has been filmed and directed by Blossom Carrasco and Anna Colom for the NGO AFP (Asian Foundation for Philanthropy) and its counterpart in the Indian state of Gujarat AWAG (Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group).
